A Celebration of Masks by Lejardinjolof

African masks have always evoked many emotions. Traditionally, they’ve been used to depict deities and gods who sometimes come out to the world of humans to often terrify them; but also certainly to bless them with their divine presence. The masks are fearsome, but also fascinating in a way that means you can’t help but look, and keep looking.

Senegalese visual artist known as lejardinjolof brings these masks to life by putting them on and capturing them unapologetically in his photos. Again, you can’t help but stare in appreciation, and wonder at the meaning of each - what they meant for our African ancestors and what they mean today, in the modern world.
