Feminine Pride by Naledi Modupi
South African artist, Naledi Modupi, uses her art to celebrate femininity and pride in cultural identity. Across her portraits, Black contemporary women are, simply put, living their lives.
The proud darkness of their skin contrasts with the myriad of browns and dark reds, contouring their faces and bodies in a way that is telling of their experiences and nuances.
In some of her more recent works, Naledi severely exaggerates the women’s black features with extra thick lips and bulging eyes.
Her simple message - one of quiet pride and women taking up space - is one that resonates.
