Decolonizing Imagination

Ghanaian artist, Nana Opoku, a.k.a. Afroscope, reimagines the future in his striking takes on Afrofuturism and the worlds where people of African descent can simply be and thrive.

Opoku's digital collages visualizes whole lands and universes called Afroscope, where the future is really just waiting to be written. He uses pictures that he takes and manipulates them until it fits the perfect land of the future. And even if that dimension isn’t perfect, the people of African descent living there are strong enough to get back up and continue to thrive with each breathe.

We also have a claim on the future, and our stories about what this future could be or other realities look like matter

In Afroscope, people learn from those that came before them - their ancestors; and take what they get to shape their surreal future for the better. A future where Black people are empowered, legitimized, and in control. Stars, planets, and horizons abound in Afroscope, depicting the vast possibilities that are waiting to be grabbed!
