Child at Play with Saidou Dicko
Burkina Faso-born artist, Saidou Dicko, invites us to remember the days of our childhoods. Saidou’s art often features mixed photography and paint featuring bright, mostly textured and patterned backgrounds.
You’ll find semblances of these same patterns on African print textiles, and on many African mats. Saidou juxtaposes children at play on these patterns. The children are silhouettes, at once emphasizing pride in their Black skin while inviting any viewer to place themselves in their shoes, getting them back to their inner child. Meanwhile, the ever-present red cross in Saidou’s creations are a nod to his native Fulani culture, despite him growing up and living in France. We love it.
