Technology and Survival with Maurice Mbikayi

Congolese artist, Maurice Mbikayi, turns discarded technology into something strange, beautiful, and political. He uses elements of tech like computer keys, motherboards, cables, phones, and other e-waste to create sculptures, wearable art, performances, photographs, and mixed-media works. His pieces look futuristic and carry a heavy story.

Much of Maurice’s work shines light on the hidden cost of technology. About how the devices we use every day depend on destructive mineral extraction and exploitative labor - often tied to African land and people. Maurice takes the leftovers of that system and gives them a new life. With each piece, he asks us to look again at what we consume and throw away, and who pays the price for it.

But while Maurice’s work is deep and incites thoughtfulness, it is also hopeful - even discarded pieces can find new life. His art reminds us that even in the middle of damage, people still find ways to transform and adapt.
