J.D. Okai Ojeikere's Hairstyles

J.D. Okai Ojeikere is a Nigerian photographer who was born in the ‘30s. He started his journey as a professional photographer in the ‘50s, when photography was uncommon and expensive. He started with a cheap little camera, and bullied his first employer, the Ministry of Information in Ibadan, for two years before he got an employment in their studio.

But by the 1960s, Nigerians were ripe with hope and dreams after Independence from colonial rule. Ojeikere travelled the country in his role as a photographer for the Nigeria Art Council to capture this enthusiastic spirit. This started him off on his collection of 'hairstyles and headdresses' works that he is best known for now, more than 50 years later! Even now, his documentary-style depictions of local Nigerian hairstyles in the ‘60s is still being exhibited, and is still inspiring a host of photographers.

Being able to view these hairstyles gives us a glimpse of culture and fashion during the period. Some of these hairstyles are shot in a studio, others on the streets; some are casual, but others are clearly elaborate enough for a special occasion. But they all undoubtedly show us Ojeikere’s talent which has spanned through the ages.

Check out a few of these hairstyles below.
