Bodies and Fabric with Tschabalala Self

US-based artist, Tschabalala Self, represents women who are bold, playful, and completely sure of themselves. She is known for building figures from paint, fabric, thread, collage, and printmaking, creating bodies that are exaggerated but very much alive.

Her figures are often made from different pieces of material stitched and painted together. The sense of fragmentation but wholeness at the same time is reminiscent of how each seemingly disparate experience makes us, us.

Tschabalala’s figures do not ask for permission to take up space. Each of them is complicated, excessive, glamorous, and beautiful. We love it.
