Asiko’s Future Masquerades
We’ve always loved Asiko’s work! The Nigerian-British artist has always worked digital magic to bring African cultural concepts to life. He continues this in one of his latest series featuring futuristic masquerades.
Masquerades are a crucial part of Nigeria’s spirituality - they are a conduit for the gods and for ancestors, and are revered during festivals when the gods and ancestors use them to ‘walk among us’. But how would these traditional masquerades manifest in the far future, when our lives are seamlessly integrated with technology? Asiko uses AI art to imagine this new future.
The result is series of masquerades whose mythical masks are steeped in tech, somehow adding to their petrifying aura reminiscent of current masquerades. See the images below.
